Hong Kong Museum of History was founded in 1975 and it shared the same art gallery with Hong Kong Museum of Art. Later, it finally set its permanent location on Chathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui in 1998. The museum is constructed as the new building and it was designed by P&T Architects and Engineers Ltd that was inspired by the architectural idea from Mr. E. Vernet Johnson.

In the Museum, it tells the story of old Hong Kong, how Hong Kong is developed, the special of Hong Kong, its connection to the country and the world. It allows opportunities for the public to get to know the root of Hong Kong and understand the deep culture of Hong Kong. It lets visitors to learn and appreciate history in different experiences. The museum collects and present information, research, exhibition relate to Hong Kong history and southern China.

The museum has total 8 galleries in two floors for its permanent exhibition, where it shows the development of Hong Kong through time, the connection with the natural environment. It all started with an exhibition that talks about from Devonian period 400 million years ago all the way till 1997 when Hong Kong was returned to China.  In permanent exhibition, it is divided into 8 categories:

  • Ancient Hong Kong
  • Dynasties: From Han to Qing
  • People culture in Hong Kong
  • Opium war & cession of Hong Kong
  • Early days and growth of Hong Kong
  • The period of occupation of Japan
  • Modern Hong Kong and return to China
